Leclair wrote two books of trio sonatas (for two violins and continuo) both of which were engraved by his wife. The first set ( Opus 4, also available from RG Editions) consists of six sonatas and is all original. For Opus 13, his second set, Leclair plundered earlier works -- his opera Scylla and Glaucus and three of his violin sonatas. It consists of three Sonates (published here as volume I, illustrated above), and three Ouvertures, (Volume II). As he himself put it, he was careful to choose only those pieces that would work well in trio format. The complete Leclair should be an essential addition to any library of baroque trio sonatas.
