Leclair wrote two books of trio sonatas (for two violins and continuo) both of which were engraved by his wife. The first set (Opus 4, first page of volume II illustrated above) consists of six sonatas and is all original. For his second set, Opus 13, also available from RG Editions Leclair plundered earlier works -- his opera Scylla and Glaucus and three of his violin sonatas. However, as he himself put it, he was careful to choose only those pieces that would work well in trio format. The complete Leclair should be an essential addition to any library of baroque trio sonatas.
